My name is Traci Richards and I’m running to become the next Oakland County Probate Judge. Allow me to share with you why I believe I’m best suited for this judgeship.
I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Florida A& M University with a B.S in 1992. Two years later I graduated from University of Michigan Law School in 1994. My first legal job was with the Kalamazoo Prosecutor’s Office. Later, I clerked with Lewis, White & Clay. After that experience, I worked with Coopers & Lybrand as a tax consultant.
In time, however, my repeated exposure to the challenges our most vulnerable community members face when navigating our legal system led me to change course. I opened my own law practice and began providing affordable legal services to those who have been traditionally underserved. I grew my practice by prioritizing the needs of my clients and in doing so, gained deep knowledge in a range of fields, including Criminal Defense, Family Law, Probate and Real Estate. I continue to operate my law practice today.
While operating my law practice, I obtained my real estate brokerage license in 2001. My real estate knowledge helps me to effectively represent clients in matters that frequently involve fraud. I also volunteer to assist vulnerable adults with avoiding fraud and recovering assets once fraud has taken place. I have given free seminars on avoiding con artists, recognizing fraudulent schemes, and protecting real estate from deed fraud.
Presently, I spend a considerable amount of time acting as a VA-appointed fiduciary for a disabled veteran who is quadriplegic and cannot communicate verbally. The service I provide is a crucial part of the support system that enables him to continue living at home without a guardian or conservator.
In keeping with my commitment to making quality legal assistance, I work with each client to minimize his or her financial burden. For matters that do not require extensive litigation, I often recommend that the client utilize my firm’s services for document preparation only, and advise the client on simple tasks that the client can easily perform. While many of my firm’s clients are individuals, I am also experienced in matters involving larger institutions and high-value transactions. I have represented the owner of one of the largest properties in the metropolitan Detroit area, numerous churches and other nonprofits. I have also been paid to work as a case mediator for two neighboring counties to help disputing parties resolve their legal disputes in what often amounts to complex legal matters.
With almost 30 years of legal experience, I have had the opportunity to observe a wide range of techniques and communication styles that seasoned judges use. I know what a well-run courtroom looks like. The best judges manage to balance the need to give each party a fair hearing while efficiently moving each case along to its conclusion.
I would like the opportunity to put my education, training and practical experience to work for the people of Oakland County.
I am passionate about protecting those least able to protect themselves. This is the reason I have chosen to be the next Oakland County Probate Judge. Probate Court is about protection. Protection also includes treating people with the respect they deserve. As a Probate Judge, I will not abuse the position or do anything that does not align with fairness. One of the worst feelings I have experienced as a litigator, is when it appears a judge is not ruling fairly.
DUE PROCESS IS A RIGHT
AND NOT A PRIVILEGE!
FAIRNESS AND RESPECT IS EXPECTED AND SHOULD BE RECEIVED !
